François Rude. Napoleon awakening to immortality. 1846.
We talked about this work of sculpture in my art history class yesterday. It is weird and cool and creepy all at once. This is basically a sculpture of Napoleon—25 years deceased—waking up and sitting up in his coffin. He has a laurel wreath around his head because, you know, Rude thought he was a great guy. Why anyone would choose to sculpt this scene baffles me, but I am glad someone did. This is an artsy shot of the sculpture, but the full view shows more of it. Cool stuff.
